Purpose:

The main purpose of the magazine is to showcase the changing talent of artists and genres though time as well as how the genres are changing, this will be done by a genre based magazine with different genres being showcased every month linking in with the genre of rap so therefore a variety of talent and music will be shown in this magazine.  For the first edition of this magazine, it will be showcasing a rap based magazine in the November edition this is because the genre of rap is the Mose popular and dated magazine at this moment in time.  One of the purpose’s for the music magazine called ‘Wrapped Up' is to inform the readers.  When thinking about the genre of rap many people know it as a minimalist and a one tone genre, consequently because of this we aim when creating the magazine to show people that there is more behind the genre that just the music which they know.  Throughout the magazine I aim to make it clear and vivid to the readers that within the genre of rap there are various sub genres, even though they all a fall off the same genre they are very different to one another.  Therefore the main purpose of this magazine is too inform and highlight to the readers about many different types of genres in every months edition.

Another purpose of this magazine is to promote the new vibrant upcoming music developing within North London. This is because recently there has been a change in music and fashion as the genre of rap has a very distinct change of fashion.   Due to this we want as editors to promote the idea that there is more behind the music.  Throughout the development of the first publication rap magazine evolving. Whilst the music of the genre is become more ‘booming' and ‘fun loving’ the fashion within the genre is become more ‘dull' and less creative.

Form:

When deciding on how I wanted the layout of my North London Magazine I chose between the options of, interviews, layout conventions and images.  I chose that throughout the magazine there would be many images of the genre of rap as well as images the fashion of soft, indie and heavy rock to show the difference between the trends.  The format for my magazine will differ from any another magazine as I am designing it's own layout so therefore it gives my magazine another unique aspect, this includes the name of my magazine in every lower right hand side corner of the pages, as well as text boxes placed directly next to a photograph relating to one another, the format of my magazine also includes a main image on most pages to catch the readers attention to gain's their focus. Furthermore, when reading ‘Wrapped Up' there will be two interview’s which show two peoples opinion about what they know about this genre, such as fashion, music and the people, so the readers are able to see the contrast between one another.  The layout of every page will each be different such as, for example, one page having lots of copy and images and the next have only one image. This is because it allows the readers to not get distracted and bored. As well as that the copy will be framed by a border of writing.  The form and layout of this edition of the magazine will be changing every month with every genre to show a variation.  My magazine will be printed and available online.

Title of the Magazine:

Wrapped Up

Genre:

I have based this months magazine on the genre of rap called ‘Wrapped Up’.  This is because rap music has three main sub genres.  These are Indie, soft and heavy metal and Country, therefore to start off this magazine i’m wanting to show a wide depth of information.  The genre of Rap music is known to be a vocal technique whilst other music genres such as hip hop are a subculture.  Within these three sub-genres fashion trends are very different to one another.  The genre of rap emphasises the rhyme, and the individual expression.  The genre of Rap is not just about the songs and rhythm but also about the artists and fashion incorporated within the genre.  The fashion within the genre of rap also has a unique element as these three sub-genres are different to one another.  Whilst this months focusing on the genre of rap next month might consider the genre of hip-hop or grime depending the sales and interest in the last months.

The genre of Rap is a prime example of how the world is changing as it is showing how people’s role models have changed throughout time whilst the music and fashion changing as well.  In the past many would be shocked about the genre of rap as it has become
unique as it’s known to be a bad influence for the younger kids, which would be its primary target audience.

                                  Wrapped Up’s Competition:

This is Wrapped Up’s competition as all three of these magazines focus on the same genre of music as mine also their colour schemes are similar to mine in the way that all these magazines uses bright colours to grab readers attention such as red, white and blue.  Moreover, the models in these front covers all represent the genre of rap with their cloths and mannerisms.  Therefore because of this XXL, High Times and The Source are my competition as we are representing our rap magazine in a similar way with similar aspects.

Target Audience:

‘Wrapped Up’ will have two different types of target audiences.  The primary target audience are boys and girls in their teenage years aged 15-18.  This target audience is only about the age of the audience not genre, race and ethnicity. This is because in this age group children are beginning to experiment and try new things therefore their choice of music will be changing, as well as that by their choice of music changing their understanding and styles of the genre will also be changing.  Furthermore 15-18 year olds would be the primary
audience because they are growing up hearing and talking about this genre of music, these children will have a NRS social grade of B and C1 this is because they would either be middle class or working class, as when thinking about upper middle class this type of music wouldn’t be directed at them.

The secondary target audience would be young adults that are interested in the fashion aged 18-35 as they are beginning to adjust to life on their own.  Within the genre of Rap music as they are still trying to stay up to date and young therefore their NRS social grade would be B as they are from the middle class group.  As well as that this age group mainly being interested in this genre of rap they are trying to reinvent themselves and interested in new types of fashion and clothing, and as established the genre of rap has a variety of different styles and fashion within the genre.

Resources and Personnel:

For this edition of the North London magazine the three main resources for the first edition we would need models, props and photoshop after the images have been taken to increase the readers interest.  The main resource and personnel we would need would be props.  This is because we are aiming to make a new online and print based magazine which is showcasing the increase in vibrant music in North London.  Props would enhance the genre of rock as the models would be wearing ripped jeans and an oversized band t-shirt and dark clothing to make it clear to the reader the focus of the magazine such as the music and fashion.

When looking at ‘Wrapped Up' there will be three different main shots to clarify that there are three main genres of rap and that we are trying to catch all aspects of its music.  By incorporating not just one aspect of this music genre but including all 3 it becomes more varied to the readers and separates itself from other single genre based music magazines.

Marketing Methods:

The main marketing method would be to print and hand out fliers which would interest the readers around popular North London rap music venues such as The Underworld and the O2 Islington as these people would be interested in buying this magazine.  Furthermore because of the primary target audience of 16-22 year olds going to youth clubs talking (word of mouth-WoM) about this magazine would create publicity for ‘Wrapped Up’ and would increase their change of more sales. Another marketing method which we are taking on board is paid media advertising on social media for example snapchat and instagram.  The reason for this is because it appeals to the primary target audience who use this type of media on a daily basis and this addresses the client brief.  This is because for this specific age group they are mainly on social media therefore this would be the most effective way to grab their attention.  Moreover, another example of a marketing method which we might use is the idea about billboards in places like Camden Market, near bars and night clubs as well as gyms because these places are popular with the target audience.  Lastly by teaming up with another magazine company as another marketing method allowing them to advertising “wrapped up” would attract those magazine customers attention towards our new North London magazine allowing them to see the comparison between one another magazines.

Distribution:

One way we are going to distribution this months magazine in person on the genre of rap is by selling copies of this months magazine in popular record and genre based shops opening up in North London, as recently these shops have become more popular therefore this emphasises the vibrant music scene developing.  As well as that going to student unions and schools in North London would be a good way to distribute this magazine as this would be the age group that would be buying the magazine.

Another way of disturbing this magazine would be online would be by designing and creating their own website for wRAPped up.  Therefore people can easily read and buy this magazine from the website without any complications, as well as generating their own magazine readers are also able to subscribe to the magazine company so they are able to get updates and more needed knowledge about the magazine such as what next months magazine might be focusing on.

Colour Scheme:

The three main colours for Wrapped Up will be red, green, black and pastel colours.  The red and green will contrast against the black and therefore will catch the viewers eyes towards the magazines and attracts their attention.  Furthermore the red and green are bright and vibrant colours as it refers to the genre of rap.

I am trying to make ‘Wrapped Up’ as eye-catching and pleasing as possible to the readers to make them want to continue reading.  Throughout the magazine I am trying to create a noticeable, striking and dramatic magazine occasionally with pastel colours used on some pages as we are trying to incorporate fashion as well in magazine as it would make it more interesting for the readers.

Article Ideas:

Wrapped Up is a North London music based magazine focusing on the genre of Rap, therefore in my magazine article I will be focusing on the topics of popular and unpopular music in north London involving the comparison between one anther, as well as that another article idea which I will focus on is the discussion about why people might dislike Rap music and ways in which were able to change this, Secondly another article idea which I am including in my magazine are some up and coming artists in North London and the stereotypically the people who would listen to of the genre of rap, lastly another article idea which I am considering is the thought that Rap is only a one tone genre, and explaining how there is more to rap which people know an understand.

Content:

The content within my magazine will be about stories, interviews, my unique selling point and reviews.  The aim for my magazine is to try and make the content different from other magazines to give it another unique aspects.  Within my magazine I will involve articles about the genre of rap discussing the ways in which rap has evolved and changed through time, as well as relevant music and concert reviews and previews which link into popular up and coming rap artists.  The content for the Magazine will also involve give aways of free concert tickets and VIP backstage passes, this links into to the primary target audience of 16-22 year olds as these are the ages where children would be experimenting and going to concerts about relevant rap related events.

Font Styles:

For my North London magazine based on the genre of rap in this months edition we would be incorporating many other factors such as the fashion and sub-genres within it, I wanted to use font styles which would stand out and attract peoples attention which links into the genre of rap as it is known as a loud and booming genre.  As well as that I will also being using a font style with has a son-serif at the ends of the letters as it creates a more casual and a font style which flows therefore a bless blocked font.  Even though we used a bold font style in the rap magazine this would not be the case in next months magazine.

The Fonts used:

The font which I am going to use for my masthead is aaight which is the last font shown below, I have chosen to use this as my main font for my front cover as it is eye catching and grabs the readers attention straight away, I have also decided to use this font as the curves and spirals resemble Rap as its known as a downmarket genre, furthermore this font style symbolises the graffiti writing which is a key element which links into rap.  Moreover I have also decided to choose this font for my masthead as it links into the primary target audience of 16-22 year olds, in some ways the font is child like as its informal and looks young.  The other two fonts which I am going to use in my front page are Futura and Sign Painter.  Futura is a modern font which is evenly spaced and easy to read therefore is used as a cover line as it would not distract from the main image and magazine title as well as this font type being graceful and is shown as a sophisticated text.  The third font used in my magazine is Sign Painter as it reminds me of the ‘bling’ in rap relating to the artists this is because of the italics used.
