Generating Ideas (P1,M1 U21)

Task One: Generating Ideas

Learning Outcomes 1 (U21): Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief.

1.How I interpreted the clients brief:

I have interpreted the clients brief to make a modern and high demand magazine.  I have been requested to produce a new online and print based music magazine established in North London on behalf of The London Magazine (explicit). This is because there is a vibrant music scene developing and because of this people should be aware of the changes in the music industry (implicit).  As well as that The London Magazine may decide to spread my views and ideas around London.  Continuing my pitch, I have also been asked to make sample pages for the first edition of the magazine (open to interpretation) which aim is to showcase the talent and venues in the local areas (implicit), which should embody a front cover and double page spread (explicit).

2.First thoughts for my interpretation:

Firstly, one factor that I interpreted is about how fashion has progressed with the evolvement of music. This closely relates to the unique North London music genre which has altered fashion throughout time through introducing the more contemporary and individual style in North London.

Secondly, another ideas I have would be to showcase the different type of music genres in North London.  The genres of music have changed throughout the decades and you can clearly see the change in music genres from Country to the more modern genre of Grime. The genres of music have changed tremendously as the decades have passed.

Furthermore, another magazine idea would be to promote venues in North London.  There are many different districts and areas in North London and as a result these areas are able to hold many different types of music genres.  An example of this would be Wembley Arena  which holds many different music concerts with varying music genres.

3.Explanation of three key ideas:

1.North London’s fashion within rap magazine:

In more detail, my first thought for my interpretation is the idea that fashion has progressed with the evolution.  During the 1970’s and 80’s when the genre of disco was at it’s most popular, people would wear tight fitted clothing with shiny satin buttoned-down shirts featuring a ‘disco look’ often with flared trousers and patterned shirts with bright colours, this affected the way that we listened to the music. As music has developed and rap music has increased in popularity whilst people are changed what they wear, people would wear baggy jeans, a hat and bandana, oversized sunglasses and baggy t-shirts. Consequently as the genres of music have changed through time we can see that fashion styles have also changed.   The progression of fashion in North London has become minimalistic and mainstream due to the fact that the genres of music have developed.  Fashion trends in some music genres have become more popular and inclusive to our lives today, this is because there are many fashion based parades that have been influenced by the genes of music such as London Fashion Week, this is mainly because there is a vibrant increase of music growing in North London.  Therefore, within the genre of rap there are many sub-genres which branch off this idea of the fashion within rap.  The primary target audience would be girls and boys in their teenage years such as 14-18 this is because at this stage, their lives are revolved around music and artists, these teenagers would be from a middle class or working class background with a NRS social grade of B and C1.  The secondary target audience would be dads in the age of 30-35 as they would want to stay up to date with their children, and would want to have a common interest.  This magazine would sell for £1.50, this is because we have an understanding that £1.50 for a magazine is expensive this is because this magazine would be at high demand as it is has only started to become popular as not many people would be aware about the change in the music industry, therefore because of this in a while it will become out of fashion and outdated like many other things and when this happens the price will deprecate slightly which might increase profits.  The colours that would be included in the magazine would be a selection of vibrant colours to grab peoples attention, including some pastel colours for example, a dusty pink, royal blue and a pastel yellow.  Within the magazine there would be one main image on each page with writing placed around the image but a lot of space around the writing to not overpower the magazine.  During the magazine there will be one interview to give some background knowledge to keep the readers engaged. The unique selling point for this magazine would be that the examples and pictures of the clothings in the music magazine would all donated from charity shops or in the near future these cloths will be given to charity shops.

Strengths
Weaknesses
Most women are interested in fashion as well as music therefore it engages their attention to the idea that the change in music genres have changed the fashion as well as many genres have different takes on fashion.
Just because the women find this interesting not all men do therefore only half of the population would be buying this magazine therefore the sales would not be as high as expected when making a new and vibrant magazine in North London.
Many people from many different ethnic groups would be interested in this magazine, as it is giving an overview aimed at everyone as people with common interests would be reading this magazine.
Even though this magazine is aimed at everyone not all ethnic groups are interested in the change in music genres as they wouldn't have been brought up involved in music.
This magazine is a hard copy, therefore the images and texts would be at their prime quality and would be eye catching to the readers to engage their attention.
More people would read and buy this magazine if it wasn’t a hard copy magazine, if it was distributed online there would be a few more purchases as now days more people are online and the idea that change in music has and different genres affecting our fashion is a modern topic.
This North London Magazine covers a variety of topics and genres, therefore it is interesting for all everyone as they all have interests in different genres.
People would find it hard to focus and stay interested in the magazine as the readers would want a specific discussion and genre, therefore the profits would decrease slightly.

2.North London genre magazine:

Moreover, another idea for my interpretation for the magazine would be about the genres of music in North London, as mentioned before the genres of music have change significantly, this is because there is a lively increase in music, the genres of music which is now outdated and old-fashioned used to be aimed at the working class and was based on form and harmony as they are able to express their own personalities.  An an example of this would the Country music which used a variety of instruments, but the genres which are not outdated and now in tact would be the genre of Hip-Pop this is because it uses rhymes and catchy melodies to make the genre popular.  As well as that hip-pop genre as well as many other uses role models to grab peoples attention towards that genre.  This magazine would have an aim to promote different genres, however each edition would focus on a specific genre i.e. November edition would be Pop, December Hip-Hop.
The primary target audience would be boys and girls aged 15-17  that are interested in a range of genres, but are going through a phase of trial.  These songs which they listen too are not usually  listened to on the radio, the second target audience would be young adults that are also interested in these types of music genre.  Although people who listen to Hip-Pop music would have a NRS of D as they would be working class, the magazine will celebrate a range of genres, to this end the class would target middle to working class readers.  The price for a genre based magazine would cost £2.99 as it would link to the disposable income available to the target audience. The genre Hip-pop might become less popular in time but people will always have an interest in it so therefore the price will not decrease or increase. The colours used in this magazine would be linked to the genre being issued that month. Rock would take on the colour scheme red, yellow and black this is because the black background would contrast against the yellow and red text.  Within the magazine there would be a selection of columns and text boxes gathered around each other some brighter than other.

Strengths
Weaknesses
Recently the genre of hip-hop has become more popular therefore lots of the younger generations are more interested in this, and would read more about hip hop.
Even though the younger generations are interested in these genre, they don’t buy magazines anymore as it is outdated, therefore it should have been online.
In the upcoming years the North London based magazine based on hip hop will be very popular, therefore there will be an increase in sales. Therefore only for a period of time this magazine would be interesting.
After a few yeas have passed hip-hop genre will become outdated and unfashionable, as it is just a phases which teenagers are going though therefore when this is over no one will be buying the magazine anymore.
The several genres being celebrated/promoted would interest a mass audience and therefore result in more profit. As the magazine explores different artists there’s a chance to create brand loyalty.
The issue with a hip hop based magazine is that  some images and songs portray black people in a negative light.
The magazine is a hard copy and because of this people would keep hold of this, consequently in many years to come people will find this genre based and will spark a memory of this era.
Most of the information that has been written on the magazine, people would already be conscious of, either from friends or online as information would be quicker on this platform.  As well as that keeping many magazines would just take up space in peoples homes and cause clutter and as a result would have a negative connotation.

3.North London venue magazine:

Lastly, venues is another idea for my interpretation for The North London Music Magazine. This is because there are plethora of music venues scattered around North London.  Due to London being a capital city and dense population it is a prime area for music concerts.  A further  example of this would be the O2 arena and the Forum in Kentish Town.  As time passed that genre of music became less popular and favoured and the genre of Grime and Hip Hop was introduced which automatically became well liked.  These areas have changed their music genres as through the years as we know there is a significant change in music.  And by changing the genres of music it would make these venues more popular and well known.  The Primary target audience for this would be young adults aged 20-27 this is because they would have just started to take care of them selfs and earn their own money, and therefore they would have become interested in venues in North London, as well as that the secondary target audience would be women and men aged 30-45 as some would still be interested in going to venues as they are still at their stage in their lives wanting to go out and explore.  The NRS social grade would be B as the are middle class, as they have no issue going to venues.  The price for a venue based magazine in North London the price would be £0.60 as this type of magazine is not be popular and would not be at high demand therefore the price isn’t as high as many other magazines such a grime or country music.  The colour scheme for this venue based magazine would involve yellow, blue and white, this is because it would want to capture peoples attention.  Within the magazine there would be a number of interviews as well as numbers colours within the magazine.

Strengths
Weaknesses
This magazine would mention many different genres and topics throughout the magazine therefore would appeal to a large range of target audiences.
When looking at a Venue Based magazine it wouldn’t grab the younger generations attention therefore they would not even consider reading it.
The magazine isn’t expensive and is much cheaper than previous magazines, therefore more people would consider buying it.
As a result of making a cheap magazine this means that when making it they knew it wouldn’t be popular and purchased at a high rate.
Provides more detailed information about venues in North London providing the readers about the new vibrant music developing in North London.
Even though the magazine would provide a large amount of information, by the time the magazine was published most people would either not be interested or would have found this out a

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I have decided to choose my second idea for my interpretation which is the idea to focus on genres but as well as the idea that this genre based magazine will be changing months to show case many different genres and artists at their finest.  For the first edition this will be shown through the genre of rock as well as many sub genres such as Alternative rock, glam rock, and many more, this would show how all different genres have a change in fashion, which would be mentioned throughout this North London based magazine. As a result of this the genre of rock will be showing the new vibrant scene developing  in North London as fashion and music play a key role to our lives today. This magazine would be distributed both online and as a hard copy this is because technology now days have improved and as we are trying to show the vibrant music scene developing we need this to appeal to peoples lives now days, as well as that it would also be distributed as a hard copy as the writing and colour would be at its prime quality and would be more noticeable to the viewer.  The magazine will be focusing on the differences and similarities of the sub genres in the genre of rock as well as in fashion.  Even though this is the case for this months magazine on Rap, it might not be for the next as it will be focusing on a different genre and different artists.
